A total of 108 entries from 24 nations were examined and graded by the DAME – Design Awards Mets – jury in the course of the most prestigious international design competition for new maritime accessories and equipment.
The plaudits are handed out at the Marine Equipment Trade Show (METS) in Amsterdam, of course. An event that focus on shining a spotlight on new concepts and designs in the global pleasure boat sector.
However, alongside the products that Bill Dixon and his cohorts on the jury chose as the nominees and winners in categories that ranged from onboard electronics to technical clothing and deck hardware, we’ve also included a few products that impressed us as setting new technological, research and design benchmarks in innovation in their areas.
The P43 Diamond is one of 13 pilot seat models designed and made by Besenzoni (www.besenzoni.it). Available in a choice of vinyl or leather, it has electrically adjustable height, back angle, seat slide and rotation, Can also be supplied with customised boat logo.
Magnifico is a carbon fibre fender from Exit (exitcarbon.com). Inspired by mooring dolphins of the Venice lagoon, it was nominated for the DAME (Design Award Mets). Easy to fit or remove from the transom beach platform, turning it into a secure mooring point when required.
Developed by Michel Sauget and François Angoulvant and sold by Greement Courant (greement-courant.fr), Nub is a new DAME-nominated spherical friction block. It weighs a feather light 16 g and can handle serious loads.
IMED of Auckland (NZ) specialises in making waterproof, bespoke, backlit superyacht helms. Founded in 2001, IMED (www.imed.co.nz) has supplied control panels to yachts of the likes of Imagine II (44 m Alloy Yachts) and Como (44 m Feadship).
The first titanium 4-blade foldable propeller is the work of English company Bruntons Propellers (www.bruntons-propellers.com). The 36” model is part of the Varifold series, is 50 kg lighter than a conventional one and was made for Nikata, the Baltic 115’ penned by Judel Vrolijk and Nauta Design.

Skyline by Spradling
More than 200 different colours and 20 new types of textile. That’s the kind of dedication that garnered Spradling (www.spradling.eu) a DAME nomination for its new line of textiles that combine state-of-the-art metallic ink printing techniques in its Silvertex® range which is available in a huge choice of colours.
The L9100 has received yet another Mets Design Award Mets nomination. The exterior spotlight is built-in to sun-awning supports (making it ideal for cockpit lighting) and was unveiled at the Amsterdam event by Palagi (www.palagi.it) The beam angle (4/6 W power) is adjustable to 40°.
Official Volvo Ocean Race supplier Gottifredi Maffioli (www.gottifredimaffioli.com) has a range of yachting ropes for all kinds of applications but at the METS presented a special black Dyneema sleeve that protects ropes (polyester included) from fraying and abrasion.
The Sonar Server from Digital Yacht (digitalyacht.net) will give you positioning and depth readings to any instrument that is NMEA standard and also send them wirelessly to any tablet updating charts in real time to improve graphics. Another DAME nominee.
“Sound to Light” was developed by Lumishore (www.lumishore.com) and nominated for the Dame awards thanks to EOS, a networked, sound-to-light full colour-change, colour-mix, synchronising underwater lighting system.
The NautiBuoymarine multifunctional inflatable platforms (nautibuoymarine.com) won the “deck hardware, sails and rigging” category at the 2015 DAME awards. The structure of the inflatable chambers makes the platforms incredibly robust and very versatile – they’re suited to a wide range of jobs.
The Lume on Lifejacket bladder illumination lights by Spinlock (www.spinlock.co.uk) are another DAME winner. They stick to the underside of lifejacket bladders which then act as a diffuser, lighting up the entire jacket and making the wearer instantly visible from quite long distances.
Foglizzo (www.foglizzo.com) has been customising and developing quality hides since 1921 and offers a range of collections, colours and treatments to satisfy all tastes, requirements and sectors. One example is the fire-resistant First Class leather used by designer Rita Weber for the 86m Lürssen Quattroelle’s Eurocopter AC135 Zig Zag.
